Mogg Tops Field at U.S. Senior Open Qualifier
Brian Mogg earned medalist honors at a U.S. Senior Open Qualifier played May 9 at Waverley Country Club in Portland. Mogg, Robert Niger and Pat O’Donnell finished in the top three and have advanced to the 2022 U.S. Senior Open Championship set for June 23-26 at Saucon Valley CC in Bethlehem, Pa.
Mogg, a professional from Windermere, Fla., was the only player under par for the qualifier. He tallied five birdies, offset by a pair of bogeys, to finish four strokes ahead of the field at 3-under par.
Niger and O’Donnell tied for second at 1-over par. Brent Murray (+1) and Dwain Barfuss (+2) finished as first and second alternates respectively.
The USGA has accepted 3,001 entries for the 42nd U.S. Senior Open Championship. Ten champions are among the 77 players who are currently fully exempt into the championship.
Jim Furyk, the 2021 champion and a Pennsylvania native, and nine other Senior Open champions are fully exempt from having to qualify for the championship. They are: Olin Browne (2011), Roger Chapman (2012), Fred Funk (2009), Bernhard Langer (2010), Jeff Maggert (2015), Colin Montgomerie (2014), Gene Sauers (2016), Steve Stricker (2019) and David Toms (2018).
