Sean Collopy and Lara Tennant Lead After Day One of 2017 Oregon Mid-Amateur
MOLALLA, ORE. – Saturday produced a variety of scores, both low and high, at the 29th Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship, held this weekend at Arrowhead Golf Club in Molalla, Ore.
In the Men’s Division, Sean Collopy (Portland, Ore.) leads the rest of the field after firing a 3-under par 68 in the first round of play. This included a 4-under par 31 on the front nine, where he totaled five birdies.
Three players are tied for second place at 2-under par: Daniel Cheremnov (Hubbard, Ore.), Jack Pennington (Eugene, Ore.), and Denny Taylor (Gladstone, Ore.). Cheremnov and Taylor took advantage of “home-field advantage”, as Arrowhead serves as both players’ home course.
Jack Dukeminier (Beaverton, Ore.) and Skyler Johnson (Eugene, Ore.) round out the under-par scoring for the men, standing at 1-under par after Saturday.
The Women’s Division had just one player shoot under par on Saturday: Lara Tennant (Portland, Ore.). This year’s Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur Champion shot a 1-under par 70 to lead the field by three shots heading into Sunday’s final round. Tennant’s round included an eagle on the par-4 sixth hole.
Amanda Jacobs (Portland, Ore.), runner-up in last month’s Oregon Women’s Amateur, is in second at 2-over par. Gretchen Johnson (Portland, Ore.), the winner of this year’s OGA Tournament of Champions, is at 4-over, while Rosie Cook (Bend, Ore.) is in fourth at 6-over.
Defending champion Brie Stone (Veneta, Ore.) will have to stage a major comeback in order to win her seventh title after she struggled on Saturday, shooting 82 (+11).
