Quarterfinals Set for 109th Oregon Amateur, 35th Oregon Senior Women's Amateur

BEND, Ore. ­­– After a plethora of matches on Thursday, the quarterfinals are set for Friday morning at the 109th Oregon Amateur and the 35th Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur Championships. Both events are being held concurrently this week at Bend Golf Club in Bend, Ore. Quarterfinal matches will take place Friday morning. Semifinal matches will then follow in the afternoon at Bend Golf Club.

The Men’s field will feature a mix of college players and mid-amateurs in the final eight. David Hansen (Edmonds, Wash.), who beat No. 1 seed and Men’s medalist Justin Kadin (Corvallis, Ore.) in the round of 32, will play Brian Humphreys (Vancouver, Wash.), Oregon Amateur runner-up the past two years, in the first quarterfinal.

The second quarterfinal will include Santa Clara rising senior Michiel Eyre (Salem, Ore.) against Oregon State University incoming sophomore Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, Wash.). Eyre defeated Richmond’s Ben Wanichek (Eugene, Ore.) in the round of 16, while Tibbits defeated C.J. Sitton (West Linn, Ore.) to advance to the quarterfinals.

Bryce Wortman (Creswell, Ore.), the San Jose State rising junior, will play former Gonzaga golfer David Ganz (Portland, Ore.) in the third quarterfinal. Wortman, the No. 47 seed entering match play, beat Weber State rising sophomore Reese Fisher (Medford, Ore.) in the round of 32 and then defeated the No. 2 seed Trevor Harding (Portland, Ore.) in the round of 16. Ganz, who advanced to the round of 16 in 2017, beat JC Riter (Portland, Ore.) to reach this year’s quarterfinals.

The fourth and final quarterfinal will feature Michael Senatra (Happy Valley, Ore.) and Robbie Ziegler. Senatra advanced to last year’s Oregon Senior Men’s Amateur quarterfinals, as well as the round of 64 at the 2015 Oregon Amateur. Ziegler, the former University of Oregon golfer, beat former Duck teammate Jack Pennington (Eugene, Ore.) to reach the final eight.

The Women’s quarterfinals are dominated by college players. No. 1 seed Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.) will play former University of Texas Rio Grande Valley golfer Jessica Young (Wedderburn, Ore.) in the first quarterfinal, while University of Houston rising junior Amanda Elich (Camas, Wash.) will play 2015 Oregon Women’s Amateur runner-up Madison Odiorne (Bend, Ore.) in the second quarterfinal.

The third quarterfinal will be Ellen Secor (Portland, Ore.), Colorado State rising junior and the No. 2 seed, against last year’s runner-up, Amanda Jacobs (Portland, Ore.). Both competitors played hard-fought matches on Thursday, with Secor defeating the University of Nevada – Reno’s Jenny Krause (Eugene, Ore.) in 20 holes and Jacobs beating former Portland State golfer Hannah Swanson (Forest Grove, Ore.) 2-up.

In the final quarterfinal, Oregon State rising sophomore Ellie Slama (Salem, Ore.) will play the University of Oregon’s Madi Daniel (Bakersfield, Calif.) in an Oregon State-Oregon matchup. Slama survived a 22-hole marathon against Gretchen Johnson (Portland, Ore.) in the round of 16, while Daniel defeated Washington State golfer Emily Baumgart (Pullman, Wash.) in a Pac-12 battle to reach the quarters.

The Senior Women’s Amateur featured a few upsets and a few notable names advancing. Top-seed Sandy Cameron (Redmond, Ore.) will play Joori Kim (West Linn, Ore.) in one quarterfinal, while Ginny Burkey (Eugene, Ore.), the No. 4 seed, will play 2004 champion Marcia Fisher (Molalla, Ore.).

The defending campion, Lara Tennant (Portland, Ore.), will play two-time winner Leilani Norman (Eugene, Ore.) in the third quarterfinal, while the final matchup features Anita Wicks (Roseburg, Ore.), 2016 champion, against the No. 14 seed, Yon Okinaka (Ridgefield, Wash.).
