Portland's Gretchen Johnson Medals at 2018 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Qualifier
WOODBURN, Ore. – Gretchen Johnson (Portland, Ore.) earned medalist honors as she and Tina Papatolis (Issaquah, Wash.) both qualified for the 2018 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur after qualifying was held Tuesday, Aug. 21at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore.
Two qualifying spots were available at Tuesday’s qualifier. The 2018 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship will take place Sept. 21-27 at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis, Mo.
Johnson, two-time OGA Women’s Tournament of Champions winner, earned medalist honors after firing a 4-over par 76 on Tuesday. Three-over par through four holes, Johnson steadied the ship with a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole and the par-3 eighth hole. Johnson bogeyed three holes on the back, but her consistent play was enough for the top spot.
This year will mark the second-consecutive year that Johnson will play at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. In 2017, she earned the No. 35 seed and advanced to match play before falling in the round of 64.
Papatolis recently won the 85th Washington State Women’s Public Links Championship and earned second place at this year’s Washington State Women’s Mid-Amateur. She overcame a rough front-nine on Tuesday, which saw her at 5-over par, to earn the second qualifying spot after finishing at 6-over par overall (78).
Shannon Kennedy (Portland, Ore.) earned first alternate honors after finishing with a 79 (+7) on Tuesday. Kareen Markle (Meridian, Idaho) is the second alternate after shooting 80 (+8).
