By OGA Senior Rules Officials: Pete Scholz and Terry McEvilly Rule 13-2 Exceptions. Last month we tackled one of the most difficult Rules for a player or official to apply on the course. Rule 13-2, which prohibits improving the lie, area of intended stance or swing, line of play or the area in which a ball may be dropped, is very complex and is subject to interpretations. While one player or official may perceive that an action has created a potential advantage, another may not. Adding to the complexity of the Rule is a long list of exceptions. The exceptions may allow a player to improve an...

Second in a series on golf in Ireland by the veteran golf writer, with photography by Rob Perry By Blaine Newnham, RonBWriter.com On the second day of our recent trip to Ireland, we played Trump Doonbeg, the course Donald Trump bought in a fire sale in 2014. To the delight of many, the story here seems no longer the owner, but the course. Doonbeg has been turned into a terrific links layout by Trump. There is no question Trump’s influence on golf in Ireland and Scotland has been major. He built Trump International near Aberdeen in Scotland, retooled Turnberry into a grand resort and rescued...

First in a series on golf in Ireland by the veteran golf writer, with photography by Rob Perry By Blaine Newnham, RonBWriter.com My first trip to Ireland to play golf was 25 years ago. It was four old college roommates from Berkeley turning 50, getting together again, driving a rent-a-car on the other side of the road while shifting with the left hand, paying $35 for a round of golf, be it Royal County Down or Ballybunion. There weren’t many Americans around back then. We stayed in B&Bs not resort hotels, ate Irish breakfasts that stayed with us through 18 holes, and at day’s end...
