Lara Tennant, Jake Easterly Earn Titles at 30th Oregon Mid-Amateur

OREGON CITY, ORE. – Lara Tennant (Portland, Ore.) and Jake Easterly (Clackamas, Ore.) won their respective divisions Sunday at the 30th Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship, held May 5-6, 2018 at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City, Ore.

Tennant earned her second-consecutive Oregon Women’s Mid-Amateur title, and fourth overall (2003, 2007, 2017, 2018). With Sunday’s win, Easterly earned his first-career OGA title.

Tennant began Sunday’s final round two shots back of first round leader, Gretchen Johnson (Portland, Ore.). The two players battled throughout the final round with Rosie Cook (Bend, Ore.), who played with Tennant and Johnson in the final group. Heading into their second nine (the front nine, as the players began on hole no. 10), Tennant had taken a one-shot lead over Cook and a two-shot lead over Johnson.

Sunday’s second nine started out rough for Tennant, as she double-bogeyed the par-4 first hole. However, she righted the ship and played the final eight holes of her round 1-under par, with no bogeys. Cook struggled down the stretch, beginning with a double-bogey on the par-5 fifth hole, while Johnson couldn’t quite match Tennant’s impressive finish. Tennant totaled four birdies during her final round, while Johnson had zero.

Tennant finished the Championship with scores of 73-74 – 147 (+3). It’s her third OGA Championship win since the beginning of 2017. Johnson, the winner of last month’s OGA Tournament of Champions, earned second place, shooting 71-79 – 150 (+6). Cook, Amanda Jacobs (Portland, Ore.) and Leilani Norman (Eugene, Ore.) all tied for third place at 8-over par (152).

Easterly was just one shot back of first round leader Brandon Lorain (Woodburn, Ore.) entering play on Sunday. He jumped out to a four-shot lead after the front nine, in part because of an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole. He gave it back on the 10th hole with a double bogey, but played even-par the rest of the way to hold off Pat O’Donnell (Happy Valley, Ore.), who made a furious run during his final nine, birdieing three of the final eight holes.

Easterly shot scores of 69-71 – 140 (-4), while O’Donnell shot 72-69 – 141 (-3). Last year’s champion, Jack Dukeminier (Beaverton, Ore.), finished in a tie for third place with Jake O’Neal (Vancouver, Wash.) at 2-under par. Philip Bagdade (Portland, Ore.), the 2016 champion, finished T5 at 1-under par along with Gerrit Chambers (Portland, Ore.) and Travis Milleman (Portland, Ore.).
