Gallagher, Rannow Advance to U.S. Senior Open Championship

Jeff Gallagher finished 4-under par to take medalist honors at the U.S. Senior Open Sectional Qualifier played Monday at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn. Gallagher is joined by Bob Rannow as players who advance to compete in the national championship scheduled for June 26-30 at Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.

Gallagher, a professional from Henderson, Nev., had three birdies on each side to finish three strokes ahead of second place. He birdied holes 5, 7 and 8 on the front, and holes 10, 17 and 18 on the back. Gallagher’s six birdies were the most for any competitor during the 18-hole competition.

The second position came down to a playoff between Rannow, from Florence, Ore., and Tim Hval of Portland, Ore., who both finished at 1-under par through regulation. Rannow won the playoff on the third hole.

Rannow posted four bogies on the first nine, but countered those with an eagle on the par 5 fourth hole and a birdie on the par 3 eighth. He also birdied three of the first five holes on the back nine.

Hval, the first alternate from this sectional for the upcoming national championship, recorded an ace on hole No. 13, a par 3 playing 166 yards.

The qualifier featured 18-holes and a mixed field of professionals and amateurs. All told, there were 72 entrants – 42 professionals and 30 amateurs – in the sectional qualifier.
