Championship Matches Set at 2018 Oregon Junior Amateur
WARRENTON, Ore. – The Championship matches are set for each of the seven divisions at the 88th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur Championship, held this week at Astoria Golf & Country Club in Warrenton, Ore.
Championship matches will take place Friday, June 29 at Astoria G&CC. The Championship Flight final matches for each division will begin at 10 AM, running until 11 AM. Lower flight Championship matches will run from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM.
The Junior Boys (ages 16-18) Championship match will feature Nate Stember (Portland, Ore.) against Johnny Ward (Lake Oswego, Ore.). Both players competed in last year’s Hogan Cup – Stember as a representative of Team Oregon #1 and Ward on Team Oregon #2. Stember, the rising senior at Lincoln High School, won last month’s Class 6A State Title. Ward is a rising junior at Jesuit High School in Portland, winning the team title with the Crusaders in May.
The Girls (ages 15-18) Championship includes last year’s runner-up, Victoria Gailey (Tigard, Ore.) against Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.). Gailey finished her high school career at Tigard High School with four-consecutive top-10 finishes at the state championship, including a third-place finish this year. Gailey will be attending the University of Nevada – Reno beginning in the fall. Loberg, the two-time defending Class 5A state champion at Summit High School in Bend, was also the stroke play medalist this week.
In the Boys (ages 14-15) division, Ethan Tseng (Portland, Ore.) will play Brody Marconi (Portland, Ore.). Tseng won his semifinal match on Thursday against Scotty Kennon (Bandon, Ore.), at one time 6-up before making a birdie on the 17th to hold on to win 2&1. Marconi, a member of the Jesuit state title-winning team along with Ward, hasn’t had to play past the 15th hole in match play thus far.
The Intermediate Girls (ages 12-14) division will be Kyra Ly (Portland, Ore.) against Jacinda Lee (Camas, Wash.). Both players competed in close matches in Thursday’s semifinals, with each player winning 2&1 to advance to the final.
In the Intermediate Boys (ages 12-13) division, Tye Dechativong (Beaverton, Ore.) will play Adam Wrenn (Lake Oswego, Ore.). Dechativong, the No. 5 seed, has made an impressive run to the Championship match, winning 5&3 in the quarterfinals and a 3&1 win on Thursday afternoon. Wrenn is the No. 3 seed, winning both his matches 1-up.
The Pee Wee Boys (ages 8-11) Championship match will pit Lucas Vanderlip (Gold Beach, Ore.) against Drew Woolworth (Lake Oswego, Ore.). Both players shot 40 during their 9-hole qualifier earlier this week. In the Pee Wee Girls (ages 8-11) finals, Natalie Yen (West Linn, Ore.), the stroke play medalist, will play Cassie Kennon (Bandon, Ore.), the No. 2 seed.
